ZEISS Aatma lenses are inspired by characteristics of some of the most beloved classic ZEISS lenses of the 20th century. Their legacy look evokes emotion with softly painted skin texture, a rich bokeh with subtle soap bubble effect, and smooth and vibrant focus transitions. Combined with all conveniences of modern cine lenses, the Aatma lenses let cinematographers put their signature in every frame to fully embrace the soul of their craft.

Welcoming Grace

Pascale Marin, AFC

In Welcoming Grace, two virtual friends meet for the first time in real life, but things don't go as smoothly as expected. Sharing the same space and time unsettles Grace and Audrey in ways they can't quite put into words, despite their will to enjoy their time together in the City of Light. It will take a "kidnapping", a ray of winter sunshine, and a timeless melody to try to reconnect...

The Aatma lenses, of which I had four focal lengths for ‘Welcoming Grace’, are rendering skin tones beautifully with more softness. And I loved the way the focus falls off. This gives them a more distinctive character than I’m used to from other modern ZEISS lenses while remaining truly reliable with their known ergonomics.

The essence of Aatma

The name Aatma is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “innermost essence,” “self,” or "soul" and perfectly encapsulates ZEISS' philosophy in creating this new line of modern cinematography lenses. Building on our legacy, each Aatma lens is designed to resonate with the cinematographer's creative vision, allowing them to infuse their personal style into every frame. We have crafted lenses that meet the demands of today’s filmmakers while honoring the timeless qualities that have made our lenses beloved for generations. The combination of classic aesthetics and modern engineering evoke a sense of nostalgia while providing the technical precision required for contemporary filmmaking.

Softly painted skin texture

ZEISS Aatma lenses render skin texture in a beautiful way. Their lower contrast and versatile softness help paint talents’ faces in a unique blend of mellowness and control while retaining relevant details.

Rich bokeh with subtle soap bubble effect

Helping cinematographers to tell their stories by letting the background become part of the narrative rather than being completely blurred out – this is another main look aspect of the Aatma lenses. Their special, richer bokeh with beautiful subtle soap bubbles and cat’s eye towards the edges will immerse the viewer without taking the attention from the foreground action or main object.

Smooth and vibrant focus transitions

Focus pulling is an integral part of the look, an important component of the composition that facilitates storytelling. When changing focus, Aatma lenses move between the planes very elegantly: objects come into and go out of focus in a smooth and unique rather than a surprising or abrupt way.

  • Consistent proven high-end ergonomics

Engineered with professional workflows in mind, the Aatma lenses feature a proven housing design with consistent positions for iris and focus along with standardized front diameters of 95 mm (25, 35, 40, 50, 65, 85, 100) and 114 mm (18, 135). This uniformity streamlines the on-set experience, reducing time spent on adjustments and increasing overall efficiency during production.

  • Full lens data and CinCraft support

ZEISS Aatma lenses are equipped with the ZEISS eXtended Data technology, providing frame-by-frame data on lens vignetting and distortion in addition to the standard metadata provided using the Cooke /i technology protocol. On top, they are fully integrated into the ZEISS CinCraft ecosystem, supporting efficient workflows for visual effects, camera tracking, and virtual production.

  • Automatic transfer of scales and depth of field

All Aatma lenses automatically transfer information about lens scales and depth of field to ARRI Hi-5 and WCU-4 hand units when using ARRI cameras and ARRI LCS. This eliminates the need for camera assistants to manually calibrate their lenses, saving valuable time and effort on set.
