ZEISS has signed an agreement for a strategic partnership with Hyundai Mobis at the Hyundai Mobis Headquarter Mabuk Technical Center in Korea. The partnership between ZEISS and Hyundai Mobis, one of the leading global automotive suppliers of solutions and products for autonomous driving, connectivity and electrification, aims to help transform the automotive industry through holographic displays in transparent vehicle surfaces. Both companies share a strong common vision to revolutionize the user experience (UX) in the automotive sector, particularly through collaboration on display applications by integrating advanced holographic displays into vehicles.

Transformative vision for automotive displays

ZEISS Microoptics’ vision is to bring their developed multifunctional smart glass technology into every vehicle and home. Along with Hyundai Mobis, ZEISS aims to entrench the first premium transparent holographic display in the automotive market. Additionally, new and disruptive standards in automotive UX are expected to be set by replacing traditional in-vehicle display technologies. Furthermore, functional and content-generating transparent surfaces such as windshields will be introduced to display critical safety information, among other things, and enhance comfort.

By integrating ZEISS’ transparent and functionalized film, all key information will be displayed in the transparent in-plane displays in the lower area of the windshield improving driving safety by allowing the driver to view all information at once without taking their eyes off the road.

Another key advantage to transparent in-plane displays in the windshield is that they will usher in a completely new design of vehicle cockpits by eliminating the need for different display devices on the dashboard.

Moreover, the transparent film and its display functionality will offer added comfort: entertainment content can be projected directly into the passenger's field of view without obstructing the view outside.

A strong foundation for a long-term partnership

The collaboration between ZEISS and Hyundai Mobis leverages the complementary strengths of both companies. As a global leader in optical and optoelectronic technology, ZEISS brings extensive expertise in holographic solutions. Hyundai Mobis, as one of the world’s leading companies for autonomous driving, connectivity and electrification solutions and products, brings its expertise in system definition and integration.

“We are very pleased about our collaboration with Hyundai Mobis, heralded by the signing of the strategic partnership agreement. With our shared vision and a trusted partnership, we are setting new benchmarks,” said Dr. Bernhard Ohnesorge, member of the Management Board of Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH. “Together, we will set a new standard in the automotive industry and revolutionize the way information is displayed in vehicles.

ZEISS and Hyundai Mobis have already taken initial steps in product development of “Transparent Windshield Displays”. To project content onto the windshield, the the film functionalized bay ZEISS is required.

ZEISS and Hyundai Mobis have developed a Transparent Windshield Display prototype and presented it this month during a demonstration for international automotive manufacturers.

The partnership marks a significant milestone for ZEISS in the development of advanced automotive display technology and has the potential to transform the driving experience while enhancing safety and comfort for all users.
