Green future 2025: carbon neutral in what we do

Paris Climate Agreement

All good things come in twos

The global community has set itself ambitious goals to reduce global warming, mitigate climate impacts and become carbon neutral. ZEISS wants to make a contribution as a member of this global community.

Over the past few years, we have managed to record a significant reduction in our scope 1 and 2 emissions. Our measures in this regard have therefore made an impact. Our next step will be to focus on scope 3. This is also the matter of reducing emissions, which we will achieve through leveraging in purchasing, logistics and product design.

Providing support where it is needed

Poorer countries have not contributed as much to climate change, but suffer more from the consequences. They depend on aid from rich countries – and are meant to be receiving it.

ZEISS aims to be carbon neutral by 2025

Balanced carbon footprint

195 countries signed up to be climate-neutral by 2050. ZEISS also wants to make a contribution. By fiscal year 2024/25, the aim is to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions as much as possible and to offset the remaining unavoidable emissions. ZEISS will also be looking at the emissions in its upstream value chains.

Step by step: this is how ZEISS intends to achieve the Paris targets

Sustainability is a journey. The goal is clear, but the road is long. Here are the steps ZEISS will be taking.

  • A boost for new energies

ZEISS has been investing in energy-efficient sites and its own systems for generating renewable energy, such as photovoltaics, for years in addition to purchasing green power.

  • Use of natural resources

ZEISS optimizes processes factoring in environmental and economic aspects so that fewer and fewer resources will be needed. The same applies to the development of new products.

  • Green logistics

In transportation, ZEISS already relies on e-trucks. Autonomous driving should also advance logistics – always with the aim of reducing emissions and optimizing processes.

  • Clean supply chains

For the first time, ZEISS has determined and analyzed emissions in its upstream value chain. The aim of the next step is to systematically reduce emissions.

  • Using energy efficiently

Energy is becoming ever scarcer – and more expensive. This makes it all the more important to use them efficiently. That is why ZEISS regularly analyzes energy consumption to identify potential savings.

  • Offsetting emissions

The overriding goal is to reduce emissions. If this is not possible, compensation should be made. The projects selected for this purpose meet recognized standards.

  • Milestones

    Path to greater resource efficiency

To avoid losing heart on the journey to a sustainable future, it helps to celebrate successes. ZEISS has already achieved a great deal along the way. These are the most significant milestones.
