The IORT treatment workflow for brain metastases explained from the perspective of a neurosurgeon and a radiation oncologist.

In this clinical talk, Stefanie Brehmer, MD and Anna Lucas, MD are sharing their experiences in the treatment of brain metastases with intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) and illustrating how the treatment workflow look like when conventional radiotherapy is complemented by IORT.

In the first part, Stefanie Brehmer explains step by step the performance of a brain metastases resection applying IORT from a surgical point of view fostered by clinical data from the INTRAMET trial. She also points out all important aspects which need to be considered during the whole treatment workflow. Following, Anna Lucas presents the radiation oncologist’s point of view of the IORT treatment workflow for brain metastases. She illustrates in detail how they perform the IORT treatment workflow in Barcelona, from patient selection over tumor resection to irradiation and possible adjuvant therapies. In the end, advantages and possible pitfalls of IORT are discussed by both.
