Recurrent lumbar disc herniation – surgical treatment options
The surgical treatment of herniated discs is one of the most common procedures performed by a spine surgeon. Depending on multiple factors, there is a relatively high incidence of recurrent prolapse, which in some cases also requires surgical intervention. The range of therapeutic options extends from re-sequestrectomy alone to re-discectomy and fusion surgery. Currently, there is no substantial consensus on which therapeutic options lead to the best results. The aim is to present the individual algorithm including patient-specific risk factors for surgical treatment in revision disc surgery. Starting with the evaluation of the risk factors described in the literature, technical details of the revision, and the indication for fusion, the complete spectrum of possible surgical techniques will be covered.
