Quality Assurance for Battery Cells and Modules

Battery cell production and assembly

Holistic inspection ensures cell and module quality

Speed and safety for all cell types

Final inspection of the complete battery module is a particularly demanding step in the quality process. This is because modules comprise numerous cells that can each pose specific safety risks. The three different cell types – cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch – all face different challenges in terms of manufacturability, performance, durability, and safety, as well as quality testing and failure analysis.

The speed of cell production and the potential safety risks mean that fast test cycles with high resolution are required.

The different cell types within battery modules

The different battery cell types present numerous challenges during production and assembly. Issues relating to overhang, weld tabs, and electrode defects can lead to malfunctions. ZEISS eMobility Solutions enables the identification of metal particles, delamination, winding, electrode burn marks, and more. When it comes to module assembly, ZEISS industrial CT can inspect these defects and even perform dimensional metrology analysis on the battery housing structure.

Key quality challenges for battery cell and module production

  • Battery Module Assembly

Inspection of glued areas with industrial CT.

    Battery module assembly

    Non-destructive inspection

ZEISS VoluMax 9 titan inspects overhang and glued areas during the final check of the complete battery module. This compact and robust industrial CT system delivers 450 kV performance while maintaining a remarkably small footprint. The 3k detector and 1,500 W power range offer outstanding penetration strength that is vital for handling large and dense battery modules.

  • Battery Cell Inspection

Metal particle detection with ZEISS INSPECT X-Ray and ZADD.

    Battery cell inspection

    Metal detection via CT

Since metal contamination during battery cell manufacturing can cause a short circuit, ZEISS industrial CT is used to inspect metal particles. The powerful analysis software ZEISS INSPECT X-Ray enables visualization and inspection of CT volume data, while the ZEISS Automated Defect Detection (ZADD) module delivers quick, reliable, and automatic detection of metal particles in batteries.
