Global leader in the manufacture of turbine blades

Doncasters has a long tradition. Almost 250 years after its founding, the company serves the world's leading original equipment manufacturers in the aerospace, industrial gas turbine and specialty vehicle sectors.

Specialising in the manufacture of turbine blades using the vacuum casting process, Doncasters Precision Castings Bochum offers a range of superalloys. Customer requirements for the suppliers of industrial gas turbines are constantly increasing because of ever more complex blade geometries.

In order to obtain accurate measurements, Doncasters chose ATOS 5 sensor technology. The fast and full-field digitization of cast, ceramic, and wax models in 3D enables accuracy analyses and thus minimizes the subsequent risk of failure of industrial gas turbines in operation.

ATOS 5 - High-precision acquisition of 3D data

Full-surface data acquisition and visualization of blade geometries

Turbine blades from Doncasters are used in technically demanding applications. Regardless of the application, the turbines must operate efficiently and reliably. Extensive quality assurance measures are in place at Doncasters to meet these exacting requirements.

To meet the demands of increasingly complex blade designs, 3D data capture of the internal and external geometries is essential. Doncasters uses ATOS 5 sensors both manual and automated in the ZEISS ScanBox Series 5 for precise, full-surface data. With the intuitive ZEISS INSPECT software, the captured data can be analyzed using a nominal-actual comparison. Deviations can be quickly identified and expensive scrap can be selected early in the process.

Effective inspection software

ZEISS measuring solutions are equipped with the intuitive ZEISS INSPECT software. From full-field data acquisition and mesh processing to trend analysis and digital assembly, the software supports every step of the process.

The software is user-friendly and enables automated programming of the measuring cell. The consistent workflow helps to carry out quick target/actual comparisons using the CAD model. Thanks to easy-to-understand results, Doncasters can efficiently detect the smallest defects early on and immediately implement the necessary corrections in order to minimize waste.

Quality Assurance for Energy Transformation

ZEISS Power & Energy Solutions

The Power & Energy sector plays a crucial role in achieving a successful decarbonization strategy as part of the global energy transition. It enables a shift in the energy mix from fossil fuels to zero-emission energy and the required storage solution such as hydrogen.

Doncasters Precision Casting Bochum

Doncasters has a long tradition. In 1778, it was founded by Daniel Doncaster in Sheffield, UK. It was originally a tool foundry, but now, almost 250 years later, it is the leading global supplier of original equipment manufacturers in the aerospace, industrial gas turbine, and specialty vehicle sectors. One member of this dynamic group is Doncasters Precision Castings. The Bochum site specializes in industrial gas turbines (IGT) and is a global leader in the manufacture of these. With its 570 employees, it can look back on a long history and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025.
