Mit beiden Mikroskopen können die Objekte mit relativ großem Arbeitsabstand und mit guter Tiefenschärfe untersucht werden. So können kleine Details bei niedrigerer Vergrößerung dreidimensional dargestellt werden.
Mithilfe der variablen Zoompositionen lassen sich einzelne Fasern in Textilien betrachten. Auch Pinselführung, Craquelé, Farbschichten und Signaturen auf Gemälden im Detail untersucht werden.

Lichtmikroskope mit praxisnahen Funktionen für variablen Kontrast bringen zeitgemäße Mikroskopietechnologie an Ihren Arbeitsplatz. Die Systeme sorgen für eine schonende, nichtinvasive, praktisch berührungslose und dabei hochpräzise Darstellung der zu untersuchenden Strukturen – einschließlich aller Daten, die in fundierte Berichte einfließen müssen.
Für die detaillierte Analyse von Textilien, Gemälden, Polstermöbeln und anderen Museumsobjekten ist die Bestimmung unterschiedlicher Fasern erforderlich. Die Bandbreite der Anwendungen schließt auch Bereiche wie Archäologie und Forensik mit ein. Die Fasern sind oft stark gealtert, unvollständig, brüchig oder verkohlt oder sogar versteinert. Mit Polarisationsmikroskopen lassen sich auch die Eigenschaften von Steinen und Mineralien bestimmen. Ein Dünnschliff auf einem Objektträger kann entscheidende Hinweise über die Zusammensetzung eines Steins, seine Entstehung und seine geologische Herkunft geben. In Kombination mit der Michel-Lévy-Doppelbrechungs-Farbtafel können selbst unbekannte Materialien bestimmt werden. Diese Tafel zeigt die Dicke, Phasenverzögerung und Doppelbrechung farbiger, farbloser oder transparenter Substanzen, die nicht mit dem bloßen Auge identifiziert werden können.

Die Lösung: Röntgenmikroskope
Die Mikro-CT-Röntgenmikroskopie ist ein leistungsstarkes Werkzeug in der geologischen und paläontologischen Forschung, der Taxonomie und der allgemeinen Forschung in Sammlungen. Das Innere von Objekten lässt sich damit nichtinvasiv und dreidimensional untersuchen. Es kann ein Modell der äußeren und inneren Objektmerkmale erstellt werden, indem unter Drehen aus verschiedenen Winkeln 3D‑Bilder aufgenommen werden. Diese Bilder können dann auf einem Bildschirm bearbeitet und gemessen werden. Sie liefern Daten zu vielen wichtigen Parametern, wie Abmessungen, Dichte oder Porosität.
Im 3D‑Modell können die Konservatoren einen Blick unter die Oberfläche werfen und Materialien, die unter sichtbarem Licht ähnlich aussehen, anhand verschiedener Attenuationswerte unterscheiden. Empfindliche Objekte wie tierische Präparate können ohne invasive Probenpräparation oder Schnitte untersucht werden und interne Strukturen lassen sich ohne Entnahme visualisieren.

Die Lösung: Elektronenmikroskope
Ein Rasterelektronenmikroskop (Scanning Electron Microscope, SEM) erzeugt einen Elektronenstrahl und bildet damit das zu untersuchende Präparat ab. So lassen sich detaillierte Strukturen bis in den Mikrometer- oder sogar Nanometerbereich untersuchen und analysieren. Elektronenmikroskope haben eine stärkere Vergrößerung und eine höhere Auflösung als Lichtmikroskope, wodurch selbst feinste Details in sehr kleinen Objekten sichtbar werden.
In Kombination mit einem EDX-Detektor ist es möglich, die Elementzusammensetzung von Gemälden zu ermitteln. Leistungsstarke Feldemissions-SEMs können Details auf beschichteten Proben darstellen, die gerade einmal zwei Nanometer groß sind. Environmental-SEMs ermöglichen die Untersuchung von Proben ohne vorheriger Trocknung oder Sputterbeschichtung, was gerade in Museen von großer Bedeutung ist.
