Abstract
The PetScan technique, made possible with the rapid digitization of thin sections using the Axioscan 7 Geo petrographic scanner, addresses routine petrographic analysis, research petrology, porosity estimation and other properties to investigate optical properties of minerals in thin sections to accurately estimate and determine mineral composition. The presentation concludes with Q&A between the researchers. Dr. LaCroix’s work was funded by the National Science Foundation and Kansas State University.
Key Learnings:
- Exploring powerful virtual petrography tools for digitization and remote instruction
- Pet-CAT Scan for routine petrographic analysis, research petrology, porosity and other properties to investigate optical properties of minerals
- Research tools for data management, sharing, machine learning
- Sharing petrographic information globally for research and industry
- Digitization to prevent loss of data from lost or damaged samples
