科学捜査では、射撃残渣(GSR)を環境粒子と区別して分類し、銃器が使われた犯罪現場を再現します。射撃残渣(GSR)は、雷管や火薬の燃焼残渣や銃弾、カートリッジケース、銃器に由来する粒子を指します。

それぞれのGSR粒子には特有の化学的性質がありますが、鉛、バリウム、アンチモンから構成されることが一般的です。鉛を含まない弾薬(Sintox)のGSR粒子もあります。エネルギー分散型X線分光法を利用した走査型電子顕微鏡を使うことで、ごく僅かなGSR粒子を同定して、各粒子の表面形態と構造を正確に観察することができます。
