発生生物学、分子生物学、発生学、植物科学、神経生物学などの多くの分野においてモデル生物が使われており、遺伝学研究などのさらに詳細な観察の前には通常、特別な処理や試料調製が必要です。
各種専門ラボでは、線虫(C. elegans)、ゼブラフィッシュ(Danio rerio)、キイロショウジョウバエ(Drosophila melanogaster)が広く使われています。これらのモデル生物を、卵、胚、幼生などの発達段階ごとに、定期的にソーティング、回収、計数、操作、解剖、イメージング、観察する必要があります。こうしたタスクには実体顕微鏡や解剖顕微鏡が欠かせません。

顕微鏡の要件
実体顕微鏡にはグリノー式とガリレオ式(CMO)があり、それぞれに特徴があります。ガリレオ式は照明方法、蛍光対応、画像のデジタルドキュメンテーション、人間工学に基づいた設計の点で、グリノー式よりも優れています。一方でグリノー式は小型かつ高度に統合されたシステムで、価格も手頃です。
実体顕微鏡は、3Dビュー、長い作動距離、人間工学に基づいた設計を兼ね備えており、科学者や技師の日々のルーチンワークをサポートします。このタイプの顕微鏡は、機械的操作、ソーティング、一般的な試料調製に最適です。実体顕微鏡とズーム顕微鏡は、CRISPR/Cas9による変異導入などの遺伝子組み換え実験において、GFPやRFPなどの蛍光タンパクを利用した変異体のスクリーニングにも使われます。広い実視野と高分解能のおかげでスクリーニング速度が向上します。
