“The scope is very busy, every single minute since the day of installation. We train, even through the pandemic – we did not close! One of the reasons we decided to go with ZEISS – it’s the user friendliest – it is. It’s on top of our wish list.”

12 Years ZEISS-Specific EM Experience

Dr. Soumitra Ghoshroy is a Research Professor and the Director of the Electron Microscopy Center at the University of South Carolina. Soumitra graduated from Illinois State University with an MS and from the University of New Hampshire with a PhD in Biology. He has been a Postdoctoral Researcher at Brandeis University, SUNY Stony Brook, and the University of Arizona before joining the University of South Carolina. His position at the University of South Carolina aligns very well with his extensive background in plant physiology, virology, and cell junctions. The Electron Microscopy Center is a heavily active multi-user environment with researchers from various disciplines, organizations, and industries.

What are you passionate about?

“I loved my job from the very first day. I think the most exciting part, besides the research is interacting with the students…I teach them how to use the microscope it’s not just turning knobs. All of them 100% whether it’s industry users, faculty members, post docs, undergrad, PhD; every single person uses the microscope fully independently.”

For decades ZEISS FE-SEM has been enabling researchers with differing levels of EM experience. This holds true for imaging shared facilities with diverse research applications and user backgrounds. Here, Dr. Ghoshroy speaks on what excites him, what kind of research is being performed at his university, and the tools the EM microscopists use daily at his university.

In what kind of environment do you enjoy working?

“I very much like to work with people from various backgrounds. I work with so many different kinds of people from so many disciplines, and industry users …we have a lot of users from small undergraduate institutions here in the region and from HBCU institutions – they all come here to use our microscopes. Industry partners, faculty members, post docs, undergrad, graduate students – every single person uses the microscopes fully independently.”

ZEISS Crossbeam

FIB-SEM for High Throughput 3D Analysis and Sample Preparation

Combine imaging and analytical performance of a high resolution field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) with the processing ability of a next-generation focused ion beam (FIB). You may be working in a multi-user facility, as an academic or in an industrial lab. Take advantage of ZEISS Crossbeam’s modular platform concept and upgrade your system with growing needs, e.g. with the LaserFIB for massive material ablation. During milling, imaging or when performing 3D analytics Crossbeam will speed up your FIB applications.
