Workshop Overview and Agenda

Atlas 5 is ZEISS’s high-throughput acquisition platform that extends the capability of your ZEISS SEM. Automated imaging workflows is performed within a comprehensive multi-scale, multi-modal correlative environment. In this workshop, the workflow of Atlas 5 will be covered: navigation and correlation of images from various life science sources, creation and optimization of imaging focusing on STEM projects will be covered.

This is a 3-hour virtual workshop that will be streamed live from the ZEISS Microscopy Customer Center (ZMCC) in Dublin, CA. Attendees will be able to view the operation of the instrument via screen-sharing and multiple web cameras and observe the operation of the tool as our FIB-SEM expert covers the topics detailed below.

It is recommended that attendees secure time on their instruments after the workshop sessions to apply the shared methods on their own samples. Attendees are strongly encouraged to share their images from individual sessions and interact with our Applications team through independent email threads for further optimization.

Access to a SEM after the workshop is strongly recommended to apply lessons learned and share results with applications team for further support.

  •  Introduction and basics of FESEM for imaging data acquisition.
  • Introduction to the ATLAS 5 software.
  • Overview of the workflow required to setup a STEM automated imaging run.
  • Setup of a STEM run, including parameter optimization.
  • Example(s) of previously acquired STEM image data.

  • Lab managers, engineers or technicians looking to improve their own skill level.

Learning objectives: after completion of this workshop, attendees should:​

  •  Gain an improved understanding of the ATLAS 5 software and be able to efficiently navigate to the menus and settings used for STEM workflows acquisition.
  • Improve their understanding of the STEM automated acquisition workflow using ATLAS 5 on a ZEISS FE-SEM instrument.
  • Benefit from reproducible results by improving imaging selections that optimize the quality of the STEM imaging for life science samples.
  • Share results with a wider audience by exporting acquired images and data.

David Giraldo, Ph.D. EM Applications Engineer

David has been working with and promoting SEM and FIB-SEM microscopy solutions since 2017. He joined ZEISS in 2022 as a Product Applications and Sales Specialist at ZEISS-Mexico, covering both EM and XRM systems. Since 2023, David has been part of the ZEISS MRE Applications team at the ZMCC in the Bay Area, responsible for EM applications on EVO C-SEM, Sigma FE-SEM, and Crossbeam FIB-SEM. Prior to joining ZEISS, David served as a dean professor in the School of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he also managed the Microscopy Core Facility. In this role, he collaborated with various research groups and institutions. David's background is in materials science, with a focus on biomaterials and tissue engineering, and he has extensive experience working with scientists and engineers in materials and process characterization, as well as in the industrial applications of SEM systems.
