Bio Apps Image Analysis Tools for Cell Biology and Cancer Research in Life Sciences
Many cell biology and cancer research laboratories rely on routine cellular assays with standardized analytic read-outs. For these, ZEISS has created ZEN Bio Apps, a streamlined set of image analysis tools optimally designed to perform tasks such as cell counting or cellular gene expression.
Predesigned Tools for Your Specific Application
Standardized assays for common tasks in cell biology-focused microscopy labs
ZEISS Bio Apps contains four standardized image analysis tools that fit the needs of the most frequent analysis tasks found in cell biology and cancer research labs:
- The Cell Counting app performs proliferation or survival assays.
- The Confluency app is used for scratch assays.
- The Gene Expression app measures cellular transfections or apoptosis.
- The Spot Detection app simplifies the identification of nuclear speckles or cellular vesicles
Intuitive User Interface
Designed for ease of use for even novice users
Bio Apps let you experience an optimal user interface, perfectly adapted to the task at hand with only the necessary controls visible. The one-step workflow provides immediate visual feedback, allowing the user to quickly adjust parameter settings and ensure success with the app every time.

Easy-to-Read Results in a Few Clicks
All your relevant data displayed as you need it
Each Bio App tool is designed to automatically output your relevant data in predesigned layouts that clearly show your experimental outcomes in concise and easy-to-read formats. Switch between single scene mode or carrier mode, which is optimally adapted for displaying results from multi-well plates. Easily import your data tables and graphs into lab notebooks for your records or directly into presentations for lab meetings or larger conferences.

Bio Apps and Their Corresponding Applications

Cell Counting
This app counts cells based on detecting single nuclei via nuclear markers or via phase contrast. It is suitable for end-point assays like proliferation assays, survival assays, trans-well migration assays or any other assay that determines cell numbers in a particular location.
Confluency
This app determines the area of the field of view that is overgrown with cells, mainly via image pixel variance from phase contrast or fluorescent channels. The app was developed for scratch assays in particular but may also be used to determine cell growth in general.
Gene Expression
This app is used to determine any protein expressions in or near a single cell's nucleus. The measurement area is determined by a flexibly adjustable distance and width from the nucleus' outer membrane, allowing precise analyses in arbitrary cellular compartments. Various gene expression or reporter signals are all covered, typically in transfection, reporter, apoptosis, or similar assays.
Spot Detection
Spot detection allows quantification of any cellular signals that comes in the shape of speckles. Via a flexible measurement area adjustable in distance and width around the nuclear membrane, arbitrary sub-areas of the cell can be measured. Spot detection is suitable for counting organelles, nuclear speckles, nuclear sub compartments, and similar objects.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness
When confronted with particularly challenging data sets, Bio Apps are compatible with the user-friendly, ZEN AI Toolkit, which contains deep learning solutions for image denoising, image segmentation and object classification. The ZEN Bio Apps come with a built-in deep learning model to segment cell nuclei in 2D fluorescent images. Bio Apps tools can also be used with deep learning models from APEER or 3rd party platforms, ensuring success even with noisy or otherwise hard-to-segment image data.
