在对纺织品、绘画、软垫家具以及其他种类的博物馆物件和文物进行详细分析时,对不同纤维的识别非常重要,该技术还可应用于考古学和法医学等领域。纤维通常已老化,有时甚至已碎裂、腐烂、烧焦或石化。因此仔细且无接触的调查对于基本验证、评估损害和确定其原因以及决定进一步的处理方式至关重要。
使用偏光显微镜的Herzog测试有助于区分天然纤维和合成纤维,从而能够对产地、年代和生产方法得出更有依据的结论。颜料分析则可以让人们了解作画和修复时所使用的特定颜色:哪些颜料层是画作本身的,哪些是修复师添加的,细节一目了然。

使用X射线显微镜
