独特的GSR颗粒显示出特定的化学特征;最常见的是铅、钡和锑的混合物。此外,还可以检查来自无铅型弹药(Sintox)的GSR颗粒。带能量色散X射线光谱的扫描电子显微镜可以鉴定出极少量的GSR颗粒,并且能够以高精度分析单个GSR颗粒的表面形态和成分。
