As multimedia experience centres, large planetariums are visitor magnets all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the many popular events in the large theatres every year. A high-quality fulldome system is out of the question for these domed theatres. Nevertheless, many still attach great importance to the brilliant stars of an optical-mechanical star projector.

    Zeiss Large Planetarium Berlin

    The Zeiss-Großplanetarium was built in the mid-1980s. Since 2016, the facility has been operated by the Planetarium Berlin Foundation.
    In 2016, the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district reopened with modern ZEISS technology following extensive refurbishment and technical modernisation.

    The planetarium was created in conjunction with the observatory founded in 1963 and thus indirectly follows the Zeiss Planetarium at Berlin Zoo, which was inaugurated in 1926 and fell victim to the turmoil of war. In 2010, the planetarium was reopened with a digital VELVET all-dome projection system. The system complements the ZEISS Model V optical-mechanical star projector.

    Bochum

    Zeiss Planetarium Bochum
     

    In the middle of the Ruhr region, embedded in a dense theatre and museum landscape, the Bochum Planetarium is one of the cultural attractions of the region. After extensive modernisation with the integration of the first VELVET fulldome system, the planetarium reopened in 2010. In 2020, the projectors were replaced with the latest VELVET generation with LED lighting.

    Planetarium Hamburg

    The Hamburg Planetarium is housed in a water tower and is not only impressive from an architectural point of view. The entire building was reconstructed in 2017. The centrepiece is a UNIVERSARIUM Model IX from ZEISS, complemented by a digital all-dome system. Hamburg's planetarium is now one of the most modern and best-attended in the world.

    Jena is home to the world's oldest planetarium, which opened in 1926. Over the decades, the Jena Planetarium has not only undergone technical changes to its equipment. The style and themes of the shows have changed just as much. Since 1996, a ZEISS UNIVERSARIUM has been generating the starry sky under the dome.

    Few people realise that Mannheim opened a planetarium back in 1927. The building was destroyed in the Second World War. The new Mannheim Planetarium opened at the end of October 2015 with new projection technology from ZEISS. Nine ZEISS VELVET projectors were installed as part of a comprehensive dome renovation and technical modernisation.

    Forum of the Future

    Munich was the first city in the world to be able to call a projection planetarium its own. On 7 May 1925, the Zeiss Planetarium was opened in the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
    In 2024, ZEISS installed a fulldome system consisting of five 4k projectors in the new Forum of the Future, the venue of the Deutsches Museum, where everything revolves around new ideas for a better future.

    Stuttgart

    Carl-Zeiss-Planetarium Stuttgart

    Stuttgart's first star theatre opened in May 1928, but was destroyed in the turmoil of war in 1943. The new planetarium opened in 1977. In 2001, it was renovated and a UNIVERSARIUM Model IX was installed. In April 2016, the planetarium reopened after extensive reconstruction with a ZEISS VELVET fulldome system.

    The planetarium in Lisbon is integrated into the Naval Museum. Until its reconstruction in 2004, the planetarium, which is one of the largest in Europe, registered more than three million visitors. With the upgrade to a True Black Hybrid system in 2021, the planetarium regained its place among the most modern star theatres in the world.

    In 2011, the Moscow Planetarium reopened its doors after extensive reconstruction. The largest planetarium dome in Europe with a diameter of 25 metres houses a UNIVERSARIUM Model IX star projector from ZEISS. This was the third ZEISS instrument to enter service on behalf of astronomical education since the planetarium was founded in 1929.

    The dome and auditorium of the planetarium are slightly inclined. An interesting feature is the ability to transfer images from the telescopes directly into the planetarium dome. The decision in favour of the ZEISS projector was preceded by long and intensive investigations and comparative tests. The UNIVERSARIUM model proved to be the best.

    Beijing's planetarium is of central importance to China.     After extensive reconstruction, the Birla Planetarium in Kolkata reopened its doors in 2017. A new STARMASTER VELVET hybrid planetarium from ZEISS provides astronomical insights at the heart of the building, which was constructed in 1962. The largest planetarium in India is thus continuing its educational work at a new level.

    The severe earthquake in Kobe in 1995 also affected the neighbouring city of Akashi. The planetarium building was damaged and had to be closed for a while. The Universal Projection Planetarium took no notice of the earthquake, so to speak. It functions without interruption.

    Asahikawa, the second largest city on the island of Hokkaido, is home to one of Japan's largest science centres. The ZEISS planetarium is the centre of attraction at the educational centre, which opened in 2005. The projector replaced a small ZEISS planetarium that had been successfully used for knowledge transfer since 1963.

    ZEISS completely re-equipped the planetarium with 360-degree dome projection. Eight digital projectors from the ZEISS VELVET LED series generate a shared video image with the world's highest contrast on the dome. One challenge for ZEISS was to integrate the existing star projector of Japanese origin into the joint control system using the ZEISS UNIVIEW planetarium software.
