ZEISS UVProtect Technology
Full UV protection in clear lenses. All day. Every day. For everyone.
Offer your customers full UV protection in clear lenses for healthy eyes and vision. All clear ZEISS lenses come standard with full UV protection up to 400 nm, the same level of protection as premium sunglasses.
Why is UV protection in clear lenses important?
UV radiation.
UV radiation is always present – throughout the day, all year round, during winter and summer, in sunny and even overcast conditions.
For this reason, the demand for protection is universal. To protect the skin, your customers can wear sunscreen. But they really don’t have a lot of options when it comes to protecting their eyes against harmful UV rays.
Exposure to UV radiation is increasing.
Human exposure to UV radiation is increasing due to ozone depletion and global climate change which influences surface radiation levels. An increase in life expectancy and an ever-evolving lifestyle lead to more time spent on leisure activities in ultraviolet-intense environments. This has an impact on the eyes, and as an eyecare professional, you have to look beyond regular UV lens coatings to get improved protection for your customers' eyes.
Many lenses claim to protect eyes from UV radiation.
Sadly, not all lenses fully protect the customers' eyes and the surrounding skin. Approximately 40 % of daylight UV radiation lies in wavelengths not fully blocked by materials that claim 100 % UV protection. These materials often block only up to 380 nm.2
Raising the standard of eye health
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and numerous health organisations have defined the standard for UV protection as 400 nm. ZEISS has aligned their lens portfolio ensuring these recommendations and premium standards of protection are met. UVProtect Technology is moving beyond accepted standards to a higher level of UV protection, which enables clear ZEISS plastic lenses to block harmful UV rays up to 400 nm. This is the same standard of UV protection provided by premium sunglasses.
Back surface UV protection – true UV protection from all sides.
A portion of UV radiation has an indirect impact on the eye from the sides and back surfaces of the lens. To prevent reflections from the back surface of the lens into the eye, ZEISS incorporates back surface UV protection as standard with ZEISS DuraVision coatings. This combination gives the customer much-needed, full UV protection.
