Commitment to Lifelong Eye and Vision Care

ZEISS supports World Sight Day 2024 – #LoveYourEyes

27 September 2024

Aalen, Germany | 27 September 2024 | ZEISS Vision Care

This year, World Sight Day is on October 10th and the focus is on eye health and vision care for children. Regular eye exams, vision tests, and availability of treatment for vision impairments are essential for the quality of life, education, and well-being of every child, providing them with good prospects for the future.

ZEISS has been supporting the global World Sight Day effort for years, promoting its contributions to eye and vision care for patients and consumers around the world. As a pioneer of scientific optics, ZEISS continues to challenge the limits of human imagination to create better pathways to eye care and inspire the world to see in new ways. For World Sight Day 2024, ZEISS celebrates some of the inspirational work being done around the world to create a sustainable future for improved eye health and vision care for children.

Active globally, supporting those in need

Through the Aloka Vision Programme, ZEISS enables eye care for many thousands of children in unserved regions every year. Implementing the WHO's guideline for integrated people-centered eye care and working closely with NGOs, eye clinics, and optometry colleges, ZEISS is committed to sustainably making eye care available for more and more children who would otherwise be left behind.

Other projects illustrate our global activities to offer treatments for children in need, like in Indonesia, Mozambique, Brazil or many other places, and to contribute to a stronger workforce with training centers and education programs in regions with insufficient availability to ophthalmology.

“I am really pleased whenever I see evidence of our commitment to supporting meaningful projects around the globe; projects which improve access to eye care and vision care for those in need, and so especially to underprivileged children. Lifelong eye health has to begin with our actions at young ages. Creating early awareness for how to maintain good vision can and will make a real impact on every child’s life, education, and future. And prioritizing healthy eyes as well as clear sight can help manage or even prevent vision problems as we all age. That is why we will continue to contribute to eye care and eye health with our products and solutions but also by directly getting involved with our many local projects that make a lasting impact in communities around the world,” said Jesper Wiegandt, Chief Marketing Officer at ZEISS Vision Care.

  • Aloka Vision Programme

    India

The Lions Club and ZEISS jointly organize "Eye Camps" to provide disadvantaged children in remote areas of India with ophthalmic care and vision tests.

  • Mongolia

ZEISS donated equipment to Orbis International, which implements programs for ophthalmic care in more than 200 countries around the world. Its Flying Eye Hospital team uses ZEISS equipment to treat patients like five-year-old Buyandeleger who was born with a cataract in her right eye.

  • Baby with congenital cataracts

    Indonesia

Together with its partner, Optik Tunggal, ZEISS is committed to donate 2025 pairs of spectacles for children with congenital cataract in Indonesia.

  • IOFF Fellowship

    International

Since 2020, Carl Zeiss Meditec Group supports the International Ophthalmological Fellowship Foundation e.V. (IOFF). During placements lasting several months at hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment, doctors can improve their skills in ophthalmology and later harness the knowledge gained for their work in their native countries.

Workflows and a portfolio for lifelong eye health and vision care

Increasing the availability of eye care for all children is essential because clear and healthy vision is crucial for everyone's life, education, and work. Awareness of and familiarity with today's eye care should always start at young age to promote lifelong eye care.

ZEISS offers important advice to support children's vision and eye health, including posters and other resources, for parents, teachers, and kin. For eye exams, vision tests, and treatments for refractive and non-refractive errors, ZEISS offers a full portfolio of instruments, platforms, applications, workflows, eyeglass lenses and IOLs. Our mission is to provide ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, and other eye care professionals with everything they need to provide their patients and customers, at any age, with the best possible eye and vision care.

“At ZEISS Medical Technology, we have long held a deep commitment to supporting the mission of World Sight Day and the vital efforts of ophthalmologists around the world who are helping to improve the vision and eye health of children,” said Euan S. Thomson, Ph.D., President of Ophthalmology Business and Head of the Digital Business Unit at ZEISS Medical Technology. “Working together with healthcare professionals, we’re helping to digitally transform and personalize treatment pathways, making eye care more efficient and available for patients of all ages everywhere.”
