Further development of the corporate culture - in many steps

ZEISS values Serve, Empower, Act and Win. ZEISS has an ambitious strategy with the ZEISS Agenda. To implement it successfully, the development of our corporate culture must go hand in hand with strategy development. Our culture is one of the three cornerstones of ZEISS identity. It defines our behavior and leadership and is described by the ZEISS values Serve, Empower, Act and Win.

ZEISS launched the Cultural Journey in 2008. It is our essential tool for actively developing the corporate culture.

Since the last Pulse Check, which regularly measures the extent to which our corporate culture keeps pace with the requirements of the strategy, various activities have been implemented or introduced across the various locations of ZEISS Medical Technology in order to continuously develop the corporate culture.
ZOOM MED introduces some of them.

Sharing knowledge - SSC Iberia (Spain, Portugal)

"We have so many talents in our organization. Employees who are particularly good at something, who have a special ability or specific knowledge," says Veronica Martin, Head of Shared Services at SSC Iberia. And adds: "So much knowledge that we don't actively share." The answer to this is the initiative that she created. It's about giving team members the chance to share their knowledge and their skills with other ZEISS employees. And, of course, to get more skills in presentation and didactics themselves. In addition, they receive so-called bonus points for trainings they give, which they can then use again for their own training courses.

"A new concept that represents a paradigm shift in our training approach," says Veronica Martin. Until now, many training courses have been offered by external service providers. The Iberia team starts with the first modules covering macro-economics, Excel and lean concepts. Veronica Martin summarizes the concept of knowledge sharing as follows: "I give knowledge and by giving, I get more knowledge myself."

The video was provided by the SSC Iberia and is only available in English.

A product management manual - SBU MCS, Oberkochen, Germany

A guidebook as part of a cultural initiative? Doesn't sound very obvious at first. But on a closer look - it is. Dr. Florian Geiger, Head of Product Management Visualization at SBU MCS, explains: “We have had the impression that to colleagues from surrounding functions it has not always been clear why we as product managers do what we do and how we do it." This caused silos, and in some cases incomprehension. Florian Geiger and the team are working against this: "Inspired by the ZEISS Agenda 2020 aspiration “Committed to Performance and Dialogue” of the cornerstone TEAM, we came up with the idea of this product management guidebook. It describes why we do what we do, how we do it and of course what we do. Our aim is to create transparency and a uniform understanding to brake silos and strengthen Group synergies." The first version of this guidebook is available and discussions with surrounding functions as well as product management teams from other SBUs and Segments have started.

Cross-cutting collaboration - worldwide

In the last Pulse Check, many of the participants gave feedback that there is still potential for improved cross-departmental or cross-site collaboration. Initiatives have been set up at many locations and cross-cutting teams or project teams have been formed. For example, we reported on the Innovation Excellence project team in Oberkochen, on the JOE project team in Jena and also on overarching team meetings, for example by the Artifical Intelligence experts of MED recently on yammer.

We have reported on many other cultural initiatives in recent weeks and months, here is a selection of the links:

  • Marketplaces (Oberkochen, Jena)
  • Mystery Lunches (Oberkochen, Munich, Istanbul)
  • Cultural Ambassadors (Spain)
  • Sounding Boards (Berlin, Oberkochen)
  • Working out loud (Oberkochen)

You have also initiated a cultural initiative? We are happy to cover it.
